As the holidays roll in, many of us look forward to the familiar scents of pine trees, cinnamon, and warm spices filling our homes. However, popular air fresheners can contain harmful chemicals that negatively impact indoor air quality. Luckily, there are plenty of natural ways to infuse your home with festive fragrances without the toxins.
Many store-bought air fresheners contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and synthetic fragrances, which can trigger allergies, headaches, and respiratory issues. These chemicals can linger in the air long after they’re sprayed. So with the holidays being a time when homes are filled with family, friends, and pets, it’s important to consider cleaner alternatives.
One of the easiest ways to fill your home with holiday scents is by using an essential oil diffuser. Essential oils like cinnamon, clove, pine, and orange are perfect for the season. Simply add a few drops of your favorite holiday blend to the diffuser and let it work its magic.
Tip: Make sure to avoid oils that may be harmful to pets, such as tea tree and peppermint. Stick with oils like cedarwood and frankincense, which are generally safe.
Simmer pots are a fantastic way to naturally scent your home while also adding a cozy vibe to your kitchen. Fill a pot with water and add ingredients like cinnamon sticks, cloves, orange peels, and cranberries. Let it simmer on low heat and add water throughout the day to keep the aroma going.
Create your own potpourri by mixing dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, pinecones, and star anise. You can display the potpourri in bowls around the house or place it in decorative sachets.
Candles are a holiday staple, but be cautious of paraffin-based candles that emit harmful chemicals when burned. Opt for natural soy or beeswax candles scented with essential oils instead. Look for holiday-inspired scents like cedarwood, gingerbread, and vanilla for a cozy ambiance.
If you enjoy the convenience of a room spray, you can easily make your own. Mix distilled water with witch hazel and a few drops of essential oils. Shake well and spritz throughout your home. Unlike synthetic air fresheners, this natural spray is eco-friendly and free of harmful chemicals.
Pinecones can be found easily in the Pacific Northwest during winter. After collecting them, give them a good wash and soak them in water mixed with cinnamon essential oil. Once they're dry, place them in baskets around your home to enjoy their festive scent.
